It was not a team of extraordinary individuals. Rather it was a team of talented players for whom the pride of country stood first and foremost of all the other objectives. At a time when player salaries were hardly substantial and commercialization in sports was considered a taboo, donning national jersey represented an extraordinary achievement in its own rights.
36 years from then, things have changed rapidly. Japan and India are not only poles apart in their geographic location but in FIFA football rankings. Backed by strong youth development, Japan has gone out to achieve bigger things. On the other hand, it has been downward slope for the Indian football. From being the top side in Asia in the 50’s and the 60’s, we are now in the bottom tier of footballing circles in the continent. With this background in mind, it would be daunting challenge for Syed Nayeemuddin, now in the role of national coach, as India prepares to take on the Asian giants.
Last time both these teams played each other it was in the FIFA world cup qualifiers. After thumping India to 7-0 defeat at Saitama in the first leg, Zico’s team did the double at Kolkata by defeating the hosts 4-0, leaving the strong home crowd of 90,000 unimpressed and humiliated. What was more disheartening was the unimaginative and indisciplined approach towards the game shown by the Indian team, as the national team was easily overpowered by the team from the land of the rising sun. .
While critics might be skeptical of India’s fortunes in the game and more so in the group of death, however Nayeemuddin knows that if he can play his cards right then India stand more than a chance of offering stiff resistance to Zico’s men. Against a weakened Japanese side which will be without midfield trio of Hidetoshi Nakata, Nakamura and Junichi Inamoto for the game, India’s resistance would pin on the attacking abilities of skipper Baichung Bhutia and defensive strengths of Mahesh Gawli.
Mahesh Gawli might be the most under rated player in Indian team, but the ever reliable defender who has made more than 50 appearances for the national team has earned the reputation of being the best defender in the country. Nayeemuddin would be banking on the leadership qualities in heart of Indian defense as he plans to stifle out Japanese attacks.
On other hand skipper Baichung Bhutia, remains India’s best bet for goal. The mercurial striker, who has rediscovered his form in the national league with club side East Bengal, has the ability to unsettle best defense on his day. His pace and eye for goal could prove handy against defensive duo of Nakazawa and Miamoto.
In the tune up to the crucial game on 22, India will play Hong Kong on their way to Yokohama on 18 February at Hong Kong National Stadium. While the game against the south east Asian giant would definitely give Nayeemuddin a fair idea of team’s preparations for the Japan game, but it would also give chance for new players including striker Praveen Kumar and winger Dharamjit Singh to gain valuable experience of what to expect at international level. Hong Kong who find themselves one place ahead of India in the FIFA rankings at 117, have always been a tricky customer for India. Last time both teams clashed in Seoul in 1993, India overcame Hong Kong 3-1 in FIFA world cup qualifiers.
A short 10 day camp to select the best side for the Japan game, followed by host of injuries to star players including midfielder Shanmugan Venkatesh, playmaker Climax Lawrence and Alvito D’ Cunha and winger Samir Naik, might have left the bravest of soul deterred, but Indian coach Syed Nayeemuddin appears optimistic of India capability of delivering a surprise blow to their hosts on 22. “They say it is a group of death but to me it is a group of champions. If we are able to beat the champions then we are better”, said Nayeemuddin as he lives his dream of transforming India back to the good old glory days.

http://www.zeesports.co.in/sports/football/articles/eastbengal_article.asp

East Bengal vs Mohun Bagan: More than the three points, it’s the pride at stake
ROHIT GOYAL/SOCCERNETINDIA/ZEE SPORTS

Ever since their first major clash in 1925 Calcutta Football League, the East Bengal-Mohun Bagan game has become the pinnacle of the Indian football season. The two Calcutta giants who among themselves have lifted innumerous numbers of domestic and international glories, will clash again for the first time in 2006 in the 10th edition of the National Football League on 22 January.
For countless years and generations the derby game has harbored hope of expectations, anxiety, delight and pain. While the standard of game has evolved down the ages, the one thing that has remained common has been the passion of the supporters. For supporters, the derby represents the mean to identify themselves with the color and the club they have loved through the ages. For a city which throughout its rich history, has been the epicenter of culture and modernity, the upcoming derby will signify the mixture of modern football in form of playing style and variation along with the traditional pride and ambience of Calcutta football.
Throughout the ages, not only has the standard of football experienced a dramatic change, the methodologies adopted by the two sides in getting the right results have also experienced a gradual shift. From the early 30’s where 3-2-5 formation used to be the norm and focus used to be on the centre forward and the multiple withdrawn forwards, the derby game evolved to a more tactical approach in the mid 60s. For the first time in mid 60’s pioneered by the father of modern Indian football S.A. Rahim, Indian football evolved on lines of world football. Taking a cue from the European style of play, in came the days of wingers and strikers along with the onus of having defensive and attacking strategies based on game plays and players in the team. More in the line with the changes in global football, the maidan duo were quick in adapting to the modern 4-4-2 formation in the early 80’s. At the same time, increased focus on player fitness, nutrition and diet alongside with the need of adopting more professional approach have seen the two giants employ foreign fitness trainers, residential camps and now usage of computer technology in getting the best results for their respective sides.
The two main protagonist of the match will definitely be the coaches that is East Bengal’s Phillip De Ridder and Mohun Bagan’s Jahar Das. Unlike their previous predecessors, both De Ridder and Jahar Das have not been afraid to take bold decisions. While the Belgian coach has thrown his trust in going with young players like Anupam Sarkar and Saumik Dey ahead of seasoned campaigners like Suresh in the East Bengal defense, Jahar Das has not been afraid of experimenting with the Mohun Bagan lineup in order to get the desired results.
Riding on a spate of good results against Mohammedan Sporting and Salgaocar, East Bengal will be hoping to repeat their 4-1 drubbing of Bagan in this season’s IFA Shield. The return of midfielder Jatin Singh Bisht and striker Mike Okoro from injury would offer the Belgian coach plenty of options especially with his attacking scheme of things. With Baichung looking his old self in front of goals and midfield looking a settled lot, De Ridder would have plenty of selection headaches as he would look to rumble Mohun Bagan’s defensive supremacy. The Cameroonian duo of attacking midfielder Ndem and stopper Marshall could also feature in the game, thereby adding an element of surprise to the East Bengal lineup. The biggest concern for DeRidder continues to be his untested defense. While the defense came in with the goods against Mohammedan, they showed signs of panic against Fabio Dos Passos and company in the second match.
At the same time, Mohun Bagan will be looking to resurrect their national league campaign, especially after the debacle against city rivals Mohammedan Sporting in the second round. Jahar Das’s side which fought sternly against the much fancied Mahindra United in the opening match with some resolute defending and astute gameplay, has struggled to open their goal scoring account in the two matches played so far. On the other hand, Mohun Bagan goes into the match having the more balanced outfit of the two Calcutta rivals boasting of likes of Eduardo Chacon and Mehrajuddin in defense and Mehtab Hussein and Tomba Singh in midfield. However the biggest concern for the green and maroon outfit would be its form in front of goal. Barring Ibrahim’s physical presence upfront, both Mohun Bagan foreign imports including striker Coffi, have failed to impress the Maidan critics. With Mohun Bagan looking to regain its lost pride and East Bengal looking to continue its resurgence, the stakes cannot be much higher than this.
As the players take to the pitch of the Salt Lake Stadium on 22, it will be not be all about the successful dribbles or the goal finishes they make. It will be a fight to succeed and prove oneself in the biggest spectacle of Indian football. It will be a battle for achieving a common aim which binds an individual, team and its million of supporters. For this is the game that would make ordinary individuals into an extraordinary group whose moment of brilliance or achievement will be recounted down the future generations.

Antonio Cassano- Is he the Real Deal
ROHIT GOYAL /FOOTBALL WEEKLY

Antonio Cassano becomes the latest addition to Real Madrid’s galaxy of stars after he inked a reported 5 million euro move to the Spanish giants from Italian side AS Roma. While for Madrid the move would come as a welcome boost especially after injury setbacks to striking pair of Ronaldo and skipper Raul. On the contrary the move will represent a great chance for Cassano to resurrect his struggling career.

Struggling to pick their form after start of the season, Madrid finds itself languishing far behind arch rivals Barcelona in the Spanish La Liga. Despite the galaxy of stars at its disposal, the team has been unable to lift itself for the title challenge signaling an end to era where the capital’s elite brushed past titles both domestically and internationally. On other hand, despite his supreme footballing ability, Antonio Cassano has struggled to shrug of his immature temperament which has seen him run into several feuds with team mates, club officials and coaches.

Born the day after Italy won the world cup in 1982, Cassano learnt his football in the streets of Bari Vechhia- a poor suburb in the port city of Bari. However, it was his superb goal against Inter Milan at the age of 17 for Bari, which caught the eye of the leading Italian clubs. His ability to dribble past defenses and set up scoring opportunities for fellow strikers made him one of the highly sought after talent in Italy. As the weeks past, the number of clubs associated with his services increased. So too did his price tag. It was at the age of 19 when Cassano finally signed for Roma rejecting the move to Turin giants Juventus to play alongside his idol Francesso Totti for a record fee of 20 million pounds.

Wearing his idol’s Totti’s number 10 jersey’s, Cassano made his Azzuri debut in style, with a superb chip over Polish custodian Jerzy Dudek in Warsaw. "Playing for Italy has always been my obsession and to be honest I saw that there were players being called up who weren’t as good as me,” were the confident words of Cassano after being handed Italy call for the first time by national coach Giovanni Trappatoni. “Gioellino de Bari"- The Little Gem of Bari as he is popularly known delighted the Azzuri fans with his wonderful movements and touches. “I was delighted with his performance. He did wonderfully well and showed some very intelligent touches. It was a positive test for him and he crowned it with a beautiful goal”, remarked the former Juventus manager after Cassano’s goal against the strong Polish side.

For a player with immaculate ability to dribble past defenders and set scoring chances for fellow strikers, Cassano’s talent has never been able to reach its peak because of the off field controversies surrounding him. First he was spurned out of Italy squad after numerous disagreements with Coach Claudio Gentile after the ex-Juventus defender expressed his apathy at Cassano’s commitment to Italian side. At the same time, Cassano ran into series of problems with club coach Fabio Capello which led to him missing out on Roma’s crucial matches in the Serie A.

Despite personal assurances of him being matured enough to play regularly for Italy and Roma, Cassano’s attitude has not gone well with the Cappello and subsequently Del Neiri at Roma. While Cassano might be pitted against the likes of Ronaldo, skipper Raul and Brazilian whizkid Robinho for a place in Madrid starting eleven, Cassano’s ability to play behind strikers as well as playmaker role might offer Madrid a new dimension. With former world player of the year Zinedine Zidane struggling in the role because of injuries and age, Cassano’s attacking ability and vision could easily see him step into Frenchmen’s shoes.

Hence a move to Madrid will represent opportunity for Cassano to redeem his career in a completely new league and environment. At the same time, it will give him a chance to answer his critics that he is mature enough to handle the weight of expectations involving the Madrid jersey.

Ali Karimi: Leading the Asian challenge in Europe
ROHIT GOYAL/FOOTBALL WEEKLY

Of all the Asians plying in the high profile leagues of Europe, Ali Karimi is enjoying the best run of the play. Besides being regular with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich, Karimi’s crucial goals helped the Bavarian giants to consolidate their lead at top of the German Bundesliga. The 27 year old Iranian playmaker scored the vital opening goal in Bayern’s 2-0 win over arch rivals Borrussia Dortmund, taking his season’s tally to two from fifteen appearances. Interestingly Karimi’s fellow countrymen, Ali Daei and Vahid Hashemian only managed to net one goal each during their stint with the German giants.
"That's not bad for a first half-season. I hadn't been counting on so many appearances.” remarked Karimi who started his footballing career in the streets of Tehran and parents living room.

In a game where Dortmund’s attack was all over Bayern’s defense, Karimi’s second half strike opened the flood gates for the German giants as they picked up crucial three away points before the winter break. The Iranian international benefited from a well executed interplay between striker Claudio Pizzaro and midfielder Andreas Ottl as he slotted the ball past Dortmund custodian with a deft touch. Besides silencing his critics, who questioned his selection ahead of several seasoned campaigners in Bayern’s midfield, Karimi’s goal was reward for Coach Felix Mcgath’s patience in persisting with the Iranian despite his slow start in the Bundesliga. In a team with eight world class midfielders from over six countries including Germany, Brazil and Argentina, Karimi’s regular appearance in the first team is an increasing indication of the rising influence of the former Asian footballer of the year in Mcgath’s scheme of things.

For the Iranian, joining Bayern Munich not only represented a dream come true but also highlighted his evolution as a complete footballer both on and off the field. Besides improving his attacking forays and moves, Karimi honed his defensive abilities and physical side of the game to become a more complete midfielder. Off the field, Karimi coped well with the sudden surge of expectations and pressure after joining the Bundesliga giants in addition to adapting to a new cultural environment. "He's arrived in a totally different cultural environment, and he's never played at this kind of level, I’m ready to be extremely patient with him,” said Mcgath on his continued faith in Karimi’s abilities.

With his ability to play behind the attackers and control the attacking scheme of things from midfield, Ali Karimi is being tipped as possible to successor to replace German captain Michael Ballack in Bayern’s midfield. Michael Ballack whose contract with Bayern expires in the summer of 2006, is expected to leave the club, thereby leaving the position of playmaker in Bayern’s midfield vacant.

While Karimi might not possess the charismatic qualities of Ballack, the Iranian has certainly emerged capable of leading Bayern attack with his never say die spirit and amiable personality. And the Iranian hopes to prove his worth by resisting moves to other Bundesliga clubs and improving his form in the second part of the season. "I'm hoping I grow in confidence for the second half of the season and finally hit peak form," the midfielder said.

Juan Roman Riquelme- The man behind yellow revolution
Football weekly/ROHIT GOYAL
Villarreal popularly known as the “yellow submarines” are in a midst of a fairytale. Top in their group ahead of likes of Manchester United in UEFA Champions League and with a chance to enter the knockout round in their first ever champions league appearance; things could have not got much better at the El Madrigal. For a club that made its top flight appearance in 1998 after spending nearly half of century in Spanish lower divisions, the current era represents the best in the clubs history. The man behind the club’s current success is Argentinean playmaker Juan Roman Riquelme. Not only does Riquelme drives Villarreal’s attack with his vision, but his exquisite skills and deft touches have made him one of the best players in his position.

The 27 year old who found himself surplus to requirement at Barcelona, arrived at El Madrigal on loan two seasons back. Having joined a squad built on shoe string budget, Riquelme relished the opportunity of leading the challenge of small side from south of Valencia. Within no time, Riquelme’s inch perfect distribution and goal scoring abilities landed Villarreal with UEFA Inter Toto cup followed by a place in semi finals of UEFA Cup. The following season, Riquelme netted seventeen goals in addition to eleven goal scoring assists as Villarreal finished third in the Spanish La Liga.

Former Argentinean coach Carlos Bianchi, who currently manages Villarreal’s La Liga rivals Athletico Madrid is one of the biggest fan of the Argentinean playmaker. “Román is one of the best players in the world and I will take great pleasure in watching him, even though he will be playing against me”, said Bianchi ahead of his team’s game against Villarreal.

Roman Riquelme, who hailed from a family of eleven, took to football in order to get out of poverty and hardships. Starting from neighborhood teams in Buenos Aires such as Defensores de Bella Vista and La Carpita, Riquelme caught the eye of Boca Juniors who signed him in 1996. In 1997, Riquelme won the FIFA world youth championship and South American Youth championship with Argentinean youth side before making his senior team debut against Columbia in the same year.

However it was his performance for Boca in the finals of the European/South American cup in 2001 against Spanish titans Real Madrid that caught the eye of European top clubs including Barcelona. After 18 months of negotiations, the Catalan giants finally managed to sign the Argentinean for a record fee of 25 million euros in the summer of 2002.

On eve of recent England-Argentina friendly, England coach Sven Goran Errickson remarked “Riquelme's a fantastic football player. And every time a defender or another midfielder has the ball they pick him out. He hasn't got pace but it's impossible to take the ball from him." Despite being forced to leave the game due to injury, Riquelme completely lacerated England’s midfield composing of likes of Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard with his individual brilliance.

On Match day five, Villareal’s hope of making into the knockout phase of UEFA Champions League will depend on the attacking vision of the Argentinean international. A win would not only guarantee the small club from south of Valencia with qualification into the final 16 of Europe’s elite club competition but also help in improving its financial position. With Manchester United struggling for form off late especially in midfield, Jose Manuel Pelligrini’s Villarreal team would fancy their chances of upsetting European’s elitist club at Old Trafford.

Andreas Moller Interview
Football Weekly/Rohit Goyal

Andreas Moller the former Juventus and Borrusia Dortmund star who played a stellar role in German side successful campaigns in World Cup 1990 and Euro 1996 in England, speaks to Football Weekly on the chances of the current German squad in the upcoming FIFA world cup under former team mate Jurgern Klinsmann. The attacking midfielder who made 85 appearances for his country also takes time to discuss issues surrounding transfer of Germany’s midfield star Michael Ballack.

Andreas, How would you rate German national side chances in the upcoming FIFA world cup to be hosted by Germany.

We have a very good chance to lift the world cup. We would be playing in front of home crowd and that would spur our young team to do well in the competition. In addition to having talented pool of players, we have a very good team spirit.

Your ex team mate Jurgern Klinsmann, who is now the national coach of Germany has been under criticism for his coaching methodology of handling the side from his base in United States of America.

This is not a big problem. Jurgern has things under control and in addition he has been keeping close watch on happenings in Bundesliga. At the same time, we have 3-4 friendly matches lined up in near future to help the team in its preparation for the world cup.

Do you think German side hopes would depend too much on Michael Ballack

In addition to Ballack, we have got other good players in our team including Oliver Kahn and Miroslav Klose.

How would you rate the chances of other teams in the world cup.

Brazil are the best team in the world. They have great set of players in their team. At the same time Argentina and Holland also have good chances for the world cup.

Your predictions for the final of the world cup

I would hope Brazil to meet Germany in the finals!

Michael Ballack has been the subject of transfer speculation after his refusal to commit his future to Bayern Munich. Where do you think he will be heading?

Nobody knows where he will go. He has great offers from top clubs in Italy, Spain and England, but I am hoping he stays in Germany. If he leaves for clubs abroad, it would be big loss for German Bundesliga as he is the biggest player in Germany.

Manchester United and Real Madrid have emerged as strong contenders for Ballack.

They both are big clubs but I think Manchester United would be good option for him because they are hungry for success while Madrid has a different mentality with their own style that suits South Americans the most.

Coming to Asian players plying in Bundesliga, players like Ali Karimi and Vahid Hashemian are slowly creating impact for their sides.

Yeah they are good players especially Ali Karimi. He is a good player and has done well for Bayern.

Personally, how do you foresee your career heading? We understand that you have been involved in coaching youth teams.

To be honest I don’t know but I would like to become manage club side in future. Though I attend games in German Bundesliga, I have been coaching youth teams off late. As a coach, I want to be a good trainer for young people as I always enjoy working with talented youngsters.

Interview with Alvito D' Cunha
Rohit Goyal/XtraTime

Alvito, it’s been three years since you made your move to East Bengal. How do you look at last three years?

It’s been excellent three years at East Bengal. My performance has improved and personally I am better player than I was before joining East Bengal.

What brought you to East Bengal?

East Bengal was after me for many years and the temptation to play for the biggest club in the country was always there in my mind. So when the offer came to me from East Bengal three years back, I finally made my mind to come to Kolkata. And as I look back I can say with pride that I made the right decision.

You have achieved almost everything at Kolkata in terms of club titles. How’s been the experience?

Yes, I have achieved almost everything in terms of championship except the federation cup at East Bengal. Very few footballers in their lifetime can achieve so much. I can say with pride whatever I am, is because of East Bengal.

There is constant pressure on players when they sign for club of magnitude of East Bengal to perform and win titles. Personally, how was it like for you?

There will always be pressure on players of East Bengal to win matches and titles, but then that’s part of the experience of playing for such a big club. When I signed for East Bengal, I knew it won’t be easy and I will have to constantly prove myself. And over last three years, I have worked hard constantly and become a better football than I ever was. Also after joining the club, I became a regular at the national team which was a big achievement for me.

Best highlights of the career?

It has to be ASEAN Cup. It was the biggest tournament that I have ever won. In addition, the goal I scored in the final was the best I have ever scored.

Q. You led East Bengal this season against Mohun Bagan. How was the experience of leading East Bengal in one of the biggest game in Indian football history?

It was tremendous experience leading your team in front of 60,000 fans! Being a captain of East Bengal was my dream when I came to the club. So it was a dream come true. For years I have given my best at Salgaocar and Goa and I never had the opportunity to lead the team there, but at East Bengal I got that. It also shows how much faith East Bengal club and fans have in me.

Last few years have seen strong emergence of Goan clubs at national level. What difference you see between Goan football over last few years?

There has been lot of positive developments. Strong youth development programs have been the foundation of this success which has enabled Goa to produce players of repute. Another factor which has helped is the improvement of financial status of clubs in Goa which means they can sign or retain the best players.

Q. Lot of Goan player have often expressed their concerns of playing for East Bengal.

The general feeling among lot of players is that they would not get first team opportunity at East Bengal because of competition. In addition personal reasons like family often come into play. But this competition for places can help players to improve their game and take it to next level. Also club here takes good care of players. From my experience here, I can say East Bengal is a professional club and strongly believe in Goan footballing talent.

For last couple of years, you had your share of problems with fitness and injuries

Yeah it’s been pretty frustrating that I had been on and off the field due to injury or fitness problems. But I am working on my fitness and hoping for injury free upcoming season.

Coach Bhowmick and you have enjoyed close relationship with each other both on and off the field.

Subhash Bhowmick is like father figure to me. In addition to being a good coach, he is a great human being. When I was down with my fitness problems two seasons back, he kept me at his home and took care of my diet and fitness. And within days, I was back to my best and scored the winner against Churchill in the national league.

Having committed your next two year at the club, where do you see your future in upcoming seasons?

I intend to end my playing career at East Bengal. The club has given me so much; I want to play my heart out here before I retire

Adriano: From Emperor to Pauper
ROHIT GOYAL/ Football Weekly- November

At a time when his performances for Brazil was drawing comparisons with the great Pele itself, Adriano’s disappointing domestic form for club Inter Milan has certainly raised few eyebrows. Compared to his prolific scoring record last season for the Milan giants, Adriano only managed to net 5 goals from fourteen appearances both domestically and Europe. In addition to his poor run of form this season, Adriano’s off field life has also drawn huge criticism from Inter faithful. Besides reporting late from international duty for training, Adriano and fellow team mate Martins were spotted clubbing right into the early hours by Italian newspapers few weeks back, thereby raising concerns of apparent lack of focus on behalf of the striker.

Hailed as the “Emperor” last season for tearing apart defenses with his physical presence on the field, Adriano has been a pale shadow of himself. From missing crucial chances to failing to set up plays, Adriano lack of form has meant that Inter Milan are slowly slipping away on any chance of challenging for the title. Inter who hammered minnows Livorno 5-0 in last round of Serie A have struggled to get results both at home and away. Against Roma at home, a self destructive performance saw Roma win the match 3-2. Inter Milan conceded two goals in the first half owing to defensive mistakes and were deservedly punished by Totti and company. This came on back of some disappointing away results at Sampdoria, Lazio and Porto in champions’ league.

Despite investing heavily in off season in roping the services of Walter Samuel, Luis Figo and Scolari from Real Madrid, Inter Milan’s could well be described as far from consistent. Inter who sit currently on fourth position in the Serie A find themselves 10 points behind leaders Juventus and 8 points behind arch rivals AC Milan. At the same time, some below par performances both in champions’ league and serie A have continued to pile pressure on club boss Roberto Mancini and president Forrati to take remedial action against team’s decline in form.

While Inter’s over dependence on Adriano for their title aspirations have come under huge criticism from fans and pundits alike, fellow team mates are refusing to back down in their support of the striker. Inter Milan’s midfielder and set piece expert Sinisa Mihajlovic said, “Adriano knows he's the most important Inter player and that the club, the coach and the team strongly believe in him. Adriano has to have the strength and self confidence to react, and he has these talents. He will help us do well in the championship and Champions League. He will surely help us win”.

While Adriano continues his rich vein of form for the national team, thanks to presence of creative midfielders in form of Kaka, Ronaldinho and Robinho in Brazil lineup, the former Parma striker would need to regain his form for club side or he could face lengthy spells on the bench thereby affecting his chances of playing in the next summers world cup.

Bayern Target Asia
ROHIT GOYAL/ Football Weekly- November

First it was the turn of the English and the Spanish sides to explore Asian market, now German sides are also jumping on the opportunity to market them to vastly unexplored Asian market. German giant Bayern Munich has taken the lead as their reserve team travels to India to take part in the historic IFA Shield tournament starting from 27 November. The Bavarian side for the Indian tournament will feature likes of Owen Hargreaves, Ali Karimi, Paolo Guerrero, Michael Rensing, Thorseten Finks, Mathias Zimmerman, Luis Jose Ortiz, and Andreas Ottl, along with pool of Bayern’s youth team players. The team will be coached by former German great Gerd Muller.

Martin Haegele, Head of International Affairs for Bayern Munich and the man behind Bayern’s programs in Asia said, “As one of the top clubs in the world, we know we have to go to Asia. And in Asia, we cannot confine ourselves to China and Japan. But we also need to visit countries like India, Thailand and Vietnam”. The tournament will feature India’s leading clubs including East Bengal and Mohun Bagan alongside Malaysian League champions Perlis.

While unlike many of their European counterparts who are capitalizing the Asian football market for its commercial value, Bayern Munich has been actively involved with the development of the game in Asia. In addition to giving Iranian stars Ali Dai, Vahid Hashemian and Ali Karimi a place in its first team over the last decade, Bayern has been targeting youth development in the continent through its youth academies and fan associations.

One such example is the Bayern Munich Fan Club in Singapore. Besides promoting the activities of the German giants, the fan club runs its own academy to hone the talent of budding footballers at various age group levels. The Fan club recently organized the Deutsche Telecom International Youth Cup in Singapore featuring youth teams from academies in Nigeria, Australia and Philippines. At the same time, Bayern Munich fan club also roped in the services of former German world cup star Andreas Moller to conduct a one day clinic for its footballers.

In addition to sharing his own experiences with the academy staff and boys, Moller also oversaw training session for the boys. At the end of the training session, a highly impressed Moller remarked, “The boys here are technically good and such exposure will help them to improve more”.

My Picture

Wayne Rooney: England’s goal machine
Rohit Goyal/ XtraTime

Rooney scored his first goal for England since Euro 2004 against in Copenhagen but wasn’t able to enjoy it as England slumped to a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Denmark. It was a big disappointment for Manchester United’s star Wayne Rooney, who since his debut for the England National side has been seen as lucky talisman for the national team and shoulders the hope of the nation in the next FIFA world cup. Xtratime labels Rooney as the star to watch in the FIFA 2006 World Cup in Germany.

Not only Rooney was the youngest ever player when he made his debut against Australia in February 2003 at the age of 17 years, but he has been labeled as England’s most exciting prospect in days to come. He is strong, quick, and tricky and has a habit of scoring spectacular goals and above all he is just 19 years of age. And the Manchester United ace announced himself on world stage when he become the youngest goalscorer in the European Championship 2004 by scoring against Switzerland in Coimbra. Later he went on to add two more goals against Croatia to end up as England’s top scorer in the tournament and Euro All Star Squad. Remarking on Rooney’s performance in Euro 2004 in Portugal, England coach Sven Goran Errikson said, "If Wayne plays like he did at Euro 2004, you would have to say he is world-class. No manager in the world would say no to having him in their squad and I'm sure he'll have a fantastic career. He showed in Portugal what an absolutely fantastic talent he is - but he is still only 18 and I'm sure he will be much better in the future.”

Rooney’s impact on England has been imminent. Paired alongside Real Madrid’s Michael Owen, Rooney has been able to transform the fortunes of English national squad from being chokers to world cup hopefuls. His deadly form in the English Premier League for club side Manchester United ever since he arrived in Manchester from Everton, has give defenders all over the world sleepless night. Errickson, labeling Rooney as the best talent in Europe said, "I coached both Italy's Roberto Baggio and Portugal's Rui Costa at the same age and Rooney is even better. Here, we have a player who is not just ready but mature at an exceptionally early age. Players of 18 normally need to be talked to in training and coached through games. They make mistakes and need to be protected from the media. But Rooney needs no protection. He has no nerves and already acts like a senior player. It is fantastic. Everyone loves the way Wayne Rooney is."

And with world cup next summer, Rooney and his England team mates will certainly be hoping to see more of the RooneyMania sweep over Germany 2006.

Profile
Position: Forward
Club: Manchester United
Games Played for England: 24 (3 as a substitute)
Goals: 10

England’s Chances in FIFA World Cup 2006: From Chokers to World Cup Hopefuls?

England currently boasts of a squad that can be described as rich in talent and quality. Armed with side boasting of likes of Michael Owen, David Beckham, Steven Gerrard, Wayne Rooney and Frank Lampard, England has enough quality to lift the next World Cup. However as always, the burden of expectations from expectant fans and country which is yet to see a world cup win since the mid 60’s will be the biggest test for the current English squad. Xtratime analyses the strength of current England squad,

Goalkeeper
With Paul Robinson in goal, England have a consistent and reliable keeper capable of producing some spectacular saves. Strong in air and a good shot stopper, Robinson will be Sven Goran Ericksson’s first choice ahead of inconsistent David James. However lack of big match experience could be Robinson’s major pitfall.

Defenders
On paper, England’s defense comprising of John Terry, Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole and Sol Campbell look a great combination. However spates of injuries to key defenders coupled by inconsistent showing in the qualifying matches have let the England team down. In 4-1 recent drubbing of England by Denmark, the English defenders made costly errors and defensive lapses which ultimately costed them the game.

Midfielders
Sven Goran Erriksson has a problem of plenty in the midfield department. With Steven Gerrard, David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Owen Hargreaves, Wright Phillips and all fighting for place in starting lineup, it will hard to accommodate all of the players in their preferred position. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard might have to play the holding role in the midfield in absence of any anchorman with Beckham playing on right hand side.

Forwards
England who in the late 90’s struggled to produce good world class forwards now have a wide range of strikers to choose from. With Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney expected to start in first team, likes of Jermaine Defoe, Darius Vassel and Darren Bent would be warming the bench giving Ericksson plenty of options in front.

Coach: Sven Goran Errickson

Jose Ramirez Barreto Interview
Rohit Goyal/ Soccernetindia

Q. How much is the difference in standard of football in Malaysia and India?

I think standard in Malaysia is little higher than India. Here the players are more professional in their approach.

Q. Is Malaysian league tougher than Indian league?

I think there more emotion and passion in Malaysian football compared to India. However in terms of level, I don’t think there is much difference.

Q. What role do you play in the current club?

Central midfielder.

Q. Whats the difference playing in Kolkata compared to any other place that you have played in?

I like to play in Kolkata because of fans. They really love football and for me that’s a crucial factor as it can make lot of difference in performance of a player.

Q. After playing in India for more than 4 years, was it a relief taking break from Indian football?

I think so. I was very tired for last four years. The pressure on me was too much when I was at Bagan. Also I think officials used me a lot.

Q. Was it out of frustration that you left Bagan?

Yeah. I think last two years when I was there, Bagan had a very weak team. So all responsibility was on me to perform. Add to it there were lot of politics involved.

Q. When you were playing in Kolkata, you were like God to many Bagan fans. Whats your experience of it?

I don’t think like that. Sometimes people like my football, my behaviour, my personality. But in football you never know for how long they will be with you!

Q. Kolkata derby. What about East Bengal-Mohun Bagan. Is there any match that comes close to you?

It was great experience as long as you can win . The atmosphere, pressure and tension is always too much on a player, but God was always there with me.
I don’t think I have played any match of that magnitude. But India has many good players. I can tell you for sure that there are lot of players who can easily play abroad.

Q. How can Indian football improve?

I don’t know. There is too much politics in Indian football.

SNI. Congratulations on the NFL win. How much this title meant to you and your team?

This is very big win for Dempo Football Club and also for Goan football. I am over the moon after this win.
I would dedicate the title to late Cristiano Junior, whose urge and motivation to be the very best led us all the way to this national league title. To be honest, after federation cup

Q. So did you imagine winning the National League after what happened during Federation Cup final?

To be honest, I didn’t expect to win the NFL after Junior incident. It was really tough for us to put our minds into playing good football and at that moment we were personally shattered and full of grief.

Q. It wasn’t easy journey for Dempo for the title race, especially with tough competition from Sporting and East Bengal. So how was your experience of the title run?

It was great competition from Sporting Goa and East Bengal. From the first day till the last day, the league was thrilling and we had to pay tough soccer to emerge as champions. I would rate Subhash Bhowmick tactically was the best coach of National League as his system, formation and tactics were difficult to match. At the same time, Sporting’s Chukuwama should be applauded for turning a team of deserters into championship winning material.
This victory will do world of good for Goan and Indian football as previously league was completely dominated by East Bengal and now there is a new team at the top.

Q. What about your players? Any special performer who stood out for you in this Dempo team?

Football is a team game and everyone should be applauded for putting their hearts and soul for this club. All players stood out for me and they really worked hard to give their 100%. It’s very difficult for me to single out anyone. But I would like to give special mention to team captain Stanley Colaco for playing an inspirational figure in team lineup. He led from the front and also worked very hard with the younger players.

Q. You and East Bengal coach Subhash Bhowmick had lot of off field spats during the league. What your take on this?

Subhash Bhowmick is a good coach and I respect him very much for what he has done at East Bengal and Indian football, but he should understand the point that every coach in the league is doing his best for their respective clubs and should be respected.

Q. So what are the ambitions of Dempo after winning the domestic double?

I have requested my management to retain the current squad. With 3-4 additions of good quality players like Climax, Joseph Perreira and Mahesh Gawli, I hope to build this team for international competitions. Targeting quarter finals of AFC Cup will be my ambitions. I will use all the experience I have gained from this year AFC Cup into getting better performance from this Dempo squad.

Q. Rc Prakash was dropped from the national team, do you think based on his performance throughout the season, he should be first choice for Indian national team lineup?

RC Prakash is a good striker and he has worked very hard upfront during this season. I strongly believe he should be part of Indian National Team. I understand that he hasn’t scored lot of goals this season, but he scored when it matters and should be persisted with at the national team.

Q. Word about Clifford Miranda, is he staying at the club or heading to East Bengal?

I have requested the management to keep Clifford in any possible manner. He was my best player and I don’t want him to leave the club. I am even willing to offer my personal money in order to ensure he stays at the club.

Q. How this year’s league has contributed to Indian football cause?

All clubs have become increasingly competitive and are doing their best to play good football. This way standard of the game is improving. Personally, I am a constructive coach and for years I have worked my hearts out for development of football in the country. As coaches of football clubs in India, it’s our foremost duty to ensure that the name of the country comes up and we improve our standard of football. I will ensure that through Dempo and personally, Indian football comes up in whatever we do!

Best Player in National League
Foreigner: Dudu Omagbeni
Indian: Climax Lawrence and Joseph Pereira

Toughest Opponent Faced this year
Sporting Club de Goa

Toughest Coach faced this year
Subhas Bhowmick and Clifford Chukuwama

Subhash Bhowmick Interview
Rohit Goyal/ XTRATIME

Subhash Bhowmick is not new to facing the heat as he leads his team to another season of surging expectations from fans, officials and everyone associated with the club. A familiar face in the maidans for last 35 years, Bhowmick has seen it all. From a dashing winger used to breaking down opponent defenses to a mastermind tactician, Bhowmick illustrious career has made him one of the few Indian footballers to achieve international success both as a coach and player. And determined to add more silverware in his cabinet, Subhash Bhowmick has set his sights on winning the coveted AFC Cup this season. Xtratime catches up with East Bengal coach on his plans for upcoming season.

Q. How do you see the team for the upcoming season?

It’s a very balanced team with a mixture of young and senior players. Addition of Jatin Bisht, Bernard Pires, Debabrata Roy, RC Prakash, Vijayan has also increased the quality of the side. We have almost three players for every position in the side which means there will be lot of competition for places in the side and no ones place is confirmed.

Q. Most of the players signed are on longer term deals. Is it part of your plan to build the side for future?

By giving longer term contracts to our players, we have given them security about their position in the side beside ample time to prove themselves. In past, every year we had to work with different set of players which made it difficult for me as a coach to get results on longer term. By keeping players for longer terms, we can target winning tournaments like AFC Cup and build a good team.

Q. You have always been the proponent of doing well in AFC Cup. What do you think we need to win the AFC Cup?

For winning the AFC Cup, we need to plan and prepare the team well in addition to provide them with good facilities to train with. Also its very important that we target winning AFC Cup from beginning of the season and build our plans accordingly.

Q. How do you see the development of junior East Bengal teams under Coach Tarun Dey?

The junior teams have done well off late and Tarun has put in good effort with the youngsters. There are some talented youngsters in the team and I want them to gain more experience before signing them for the senior team.

Q. What’s your ambition for East Bengal in coming years?

I want East Bengal to be flag bearer of Indian football both in India and abroad. We want to win more international trophies like AFC Cup in the coming years. To accomplish big titles, we have to be positive in our approach and nurture our team professionally for such success.

Q. You have expressed your desire to travel to Europe for football education. What specifically you are looking from such tours and any progress on the clubs?

I want to Europe to gain knowledge about the coaching system in professional clubs. I would like to gain insight into modern training methodologies and aspects like nutrition, diet, physical development at these clubs. I am in touch with few clubs including Manchester United, Everton and Millwal in England.

Q. Looking forward to the upcoming season, emergence of Goan clubs have given Indian football a new dimension. What’s your view on it and how will it help Indian football?

Emergence of Goan football is good sign for Indian football. It should have happened before as it will make competition in national level tournaments much more tougher and improve our footballing standard. Personally I feel Goan football is controlled much better and it has taken over from Bengal in terms of professionalism and youth development.

Q. You didn’t enjoy good relationship with Stephen Constantine during his reign as national team job.

After initial success, Stephen became obstinate and egoistic that he paid scant regards to institutions and persons involved with Indian football. Also there were doubts about his coaching and team selection. So called ‘yes man’ of Stephen got into the national side at the expense of deserving players. If we have done well by winning the LG Cup under Stephen, then we have done even worse by loosing to teams like Laos and Pakistan, where the football standard and infrastructure is way below us.

Q. Over past few years, there has been debate on the effect of foreigners on performance of Indian national team.

Foreigners are playing in leagues all over the world and I don’t see why they should not be allowed to play in India. Our national team performance has gone down because we don’t have a system to produce and develop players. As long as there is no such system prevalent in the country, we would struggle at national level.

Q. Looking at your playing days, what difference do you see in standard of the players and fans alike?

It’s hard to compare players from my days to current lot as every day modern football is becoming tougher and complex. As for fans, I hate to say the level of passion is on the down which can be seen by falling attendance on match days.

Q. Is Indian football going in right direction?

National League is the best thing to have happen to Indian football in last 30 years. However the way it is conducted, it is not right. There is very short span for teams to prepare, schedule is tight and its concentrated in limited regions in India. To improve Indian football, we have to spread the game in more parts of India i.e. outside Goa and Bengal. To improve things we have to adopt professional and scientific approach to the game and adopt a system to develop talent through clubs.

History beckons the Caribbean Island
ROHIT GOYAL/ Football Weekly

The island nation of Trinidad and Tobago, popularly known as Soca Warriors, are one step away from the glory of a debut appearance at FIFA World Cup finals as they take on Bahrain in the crucial world cup qualifier. With Jamaica being the only Caribbean side to make into the world cup finals, Trinidad and Tobago would have to be at their very best to unlock the determined Bahrain side.

Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker has been able to transform Trinidad Tobago from underachievers to a resilient outfit ever since his arrival in April 2005. The best example of the Warrior’s transformation came when they from goal down to defeat Mexico 2-1 in the crucial qualifier to book their place in the playoffs. Stern John scored twice against the Mexicans to finish with 12 goals in Trinidad and Tobago’s world cup qualifying. Beenhakker would be banking on his attack pairing of Dwight Yorke and John to unlock the defensive steadiness of the Middle East side. Australia based Yorke, who had won European Cup and English Premiership title during his time with Manchester United, will be crucial in shrugging off defenses and providing chances to his strike partner. In middle, Warriors would bank on 37 year old Russell Latapy to provide ammunition for the front two. The midfield wizard, who came out of retirement at behest of coach Beenhakker, has already started casting his impact on the team’s performance by setting up the chances for Stern John against Mexico.

And with Bahrain boasting of likes of Alaa Hubail and Tallal Yusuf, Beenhakker knows his defense led by Marvin Andrews would have their task cut out. “Their style of play makes them a very tricky opponent. They have a ferocious defense and are not over-eager about getting forward. They will sit back and wait for the right time to hit on the counterattack”, said the former Real Madrid and Ajax coach. Beenhakker has been trying to get the services of Trinidad origin players including striker Bobby Zamora of West Ham and Aston Villa defender JLoyd Samuel for the crucial playoff fixture.

With several of its players plying their trade in European leagues, the Dutch coach has been faced with another set of problems in scheduling the training camp for playoff matches. Compared to Bahrain who had already kicked off their preparations for the crucial fixture, Trinidad and Tobago kick start their preparations on 8th of November. However goalkeeper Shaka Hislop remains optimistic of his side’s chances despite the problems facing the side. "Come the 12th and the 16th we'll be playing in the biggest games of our lives, and we'll be ready.”

Probable Lineup:
Shaka Hislop ( Goal Keeper), John Avery, Marvin Andrews, Cyd Gray, Russel Latapy, Dennis Lawrence, Christopher Birchall, Carlos Edwards, Densil Theobald, Dwight Yorke, Stern John

Vincenzo Iaquinta : Too hot to handle
Rohit Goyal/ Football Weekly-November

With a hat trick in opening night of Champions League, Vincenzo Iaquinta announced himself on to the world stage as the next big thing to come out of Italy. The Italian international, who netted 13 goals to help his side Udinese to fourth place in the last season’s Serie A, has carried on his goal scoring exploits this season thereby attracting interests from likes of Barcelona and Juventus.

25 year old Iaquinta who figured in Marcello’s Lippi Azzuri side in their one all draw against Scotland in Glasgow, has certainly showed the potential to develop into a top notch striker on the world stage. In addition to good physique, Iaquinta possesses lightning quick pace and deft touches, enough to send any defense into shambles. His ability to operate into deeper attacking roles has made him equally more potent.

Though Iaquinta last season heroics have went largly unnoticed, he has certainly caught the eye of Juventus boss Fabio Capello. “I already wanted Iaquinta when I was at Roma. I liked him even during that time, when few people believed in him. I understood he had the qualities to become one of the most important forwards in the tournament”.

Against Panathanaikos in the champion’s league, Iaquinta demonstrated why Juventus and Barcelona were willing to splash more than 10 million dollars for his striking abilities. His first goal was all about his physical poweress when he headed the goal from Damieno Zenoni’s cross. Subsequent goals included a gentle flick and a fierce drive past the keeper as Iaquinta completed his hat trick to give Udinese their first win in Europe’s elite competition in front of home fans.

Iaquinta started his career with amateur side Reggiolo before spending the second half the 1997-1998 season at Padova in Italian Serie B. Before signing for Udinese in 2000, Iaquinta spent two seasons at Castel Di Sangro in Serie C1. Iaquinta also went to represent Italian U-20 and U-21 teams before making his senior team debut in a friendly against Iceland in March 2005.

The Italian international recently found himself frozen out of Coach Serse Cosmi’s plan after failing to agree to new contract with the club. Having slumped to four successive defeats in Serie A and Champions League, Udinese and Iaquinta were forced to call truce with the striker committing his future with the club till 2010. In doing so he became one of the highest paid players at Udinese.

Making his return into the side, Iaquinta responded favorably to Udinese trust when he led his side to 3-0 over Italian giants Lazio. The Calabria born striker netted one and created another as Udinese ended up their four match loosing streak. Delighted with return into the side, the Iaquinta said, "We produced a terrific performance tonight. This win is the right medicine and will hopefully end all the recent speculation surrounding me. It was not easy to be out and I'm glad to have extended the deal with the club. I look forward to continuing to contribute."

Raul- The forgotten man in Madrid’s elite
Rohit Goyal/Football Weekly

Real Madrid skipper Raul Gonzalez Blanco made his twist with history on match day two of Champions’s League. When heading Real’s opener in 2-1 victory over Greek outfit Olympiakos, Raul became the first player in the history of Champions League to score 50 goals. In doing so, he also surpassed the 49 European club championship goals record set by former Madrid great Alfredo De Stephano. More than the records, it has been the revival in form for the Spanish international that has brought smiles on the faces of the Bernebeu faithful.

Road to recovery

Leaving the disappointment of past couple of seasons behind him, the Spanish international has started the season on a brighter note. Besides opening Real’s account against Olympiakos in champions’ league, Raul netted three goals in the Spanish La Liga from six possible appearances. Incidentally his good scoring fortunes have coincided with Madrid’s turn in fortunes, which have seen them rise to third position in the La Liga, just two points behind surprise league leaders Getafe.

To the delight of Madrid boss Luxemburgo, Raul not only has excelled in his normal centre forward role this season but also did equally well in the attacking midfielder role. Early season injury to Zinedine Zidane forced Luxemburgo to adopt Raul in Frenchmen shoes in the team lineup and the Spanish international has not let him down. Playing behind the front two, Raul slotted well in the midfield role and was central to some of Madrid’s goal scoring moves.

Weight of expectations

Despite his impressive goal scoring feat in both domestic and European leagues over the years, Raul also had his fair share of criticism. With only 9 goals in the last edition of La Liga, the Spanish international struggled to create impact on the pitch. Below par performances coupled with Real Madrid slump in fortunes, led to his detractors labeling him as President Florentino Perez’s pet -A player who could never be removed from the team simply because of his illustrious reputation with the Madrid club. Raul featured in 31 games last season despite his poor run of form in contrast to likes of Luis Figo and Michael Owen. Both Owen and Figo despite being Madrid top performers last season, ended up spending better part of the season on the reserve line.

While part of the criticism aimed at him remains unjustified, Raul’s career has heavily been influenced by the intense demand for success at the world’s most prestigious football club. After scoring his debut goal in La Liga against Athletico in the Madrid derby at the age of seventeen, Raul rose to become one of the finest strikers in history of Spanish football. From 1996 to 2002, Raul striking finesse amassed close to 112 goals for Real Madrid in addition to host of European and domestic glories. Ever since 2002, his career has been on steep decline. Raul could only manage to score 20 goals in last two seasons of La Liga, thereby inviting criticism for his claims in Madrid starting eleven. Even in Champions League, which used to be Raul’s favorite hunting ground, he has struggled as Real Madrid ended title less two years in a row.

Leading by example

Ever since the retirement of close friend Fernando Hierro from Madrid side, Raul has shouldered the responsibility of leading the Real Madrid and Spanish national side. Besides being very much a silent performer, Raul is a footballer of intelligence and eloquence both on and off the field. When not on pitch, Raul is at home indulging in his pleasures of reading and listening to music. His silent leadership style in contrast to Hierro, characterized very much by applauding team mates’ efforts, kissing players on heads as part of encouragement, acknowledging younger players on their performance and exemplary behavior on field has not only earned him the respect of his peers but of football fraternity over the globe.

And while the odds are stacked against Madrid, fans will be hoping that Madrid’s heart and soul- Raul Blanco can built on the good start to the season and lead Madrid to title glories in his acclaimed silent way. With world cup 2006 looming round the corner, Raul will be aware that any good run of form can go long way in helping Real Madrid and Spain achieve honors at the top level.

AFC Player of Year Award: Crowning Asia’s best
ROHIT GOYAL/FOOTBALL WEEKLY-NOVEMBER

The Asian Football Confederation Player of the year 2005 Award brings 10 of the best talents from the lengths and breadths as they compete for the most valuable prize in Asian football. The list will be whittled down to three on November 14 and the winner will be announced on November 30. Football Weekly analyses the chances of all the ten nominees for the Asia’s elite footballing award.

Sami Al Jaber ( Al Hilal/ Saudi Arabia)

Having guided his country to next summers FIFA World Cup, Al Jaber will become the first west Asian player to play in four world cup finals. Despite reaching the twilight of his footballing career, Jaber continues to defy critics with his breath taking form both for the country and club side Al Hilal. His 3 goals in FIFA world cup qualifiers played an instrumental role in Saudi Arabia’s world cup campaign. In addition, Jaber’s form in domestic competitions heralded Al Hilal with four titles last season including the prestigious Saudi National league title. The Saudi international who joined Hilal in 1987, joined Wolverhampton Wanders on loan in 2000 before returning home after spate of injuries limited his impact on the English game. Praising the contribution of Jaber towards Saudi Arabia’s football, Al Hilal coach Bakita said , “I can’t imagine Al Hilal without Sami Al Jaber. He is a very important player in the striking force of Al Hilal. He has the ability to score decisive goals and also pull the team together.”
Jaber’s long and illustrious career since his international debut at tender age of seventeen, makes him one of the top candidate for AFC Player of the year prize.

Hamad Al Montashari (Al Ittihad/ Saudi Arabia)

The 23 year old defender has sprung into limelight after playing an instrumental role in Saudi Arabia’s unbeaten run in FIFA world cup qualifiers. It still might be early days in the career of the diminutive defender well known for his defending acumen and tackling, but he has shown the potential of being one of the best defenders in Asia. Montashari’s whose game is modeled after former Ittihad captains Ahmed Jalil and Mohammed Al Khalaiwi, has already claimed a winner’s medal in both the Asian and Arab Champions League with Ittihad. Praising Montashari’s abilities, Al Ittihad’s football Hamad Al Senia said, “Not only is he an accomplished defender but also one of the best in the Kingdom. He has a knack of scoring decisive goals be it for our club or the national team.”
However, this year is too soon for the Al-Ittihad star but it won't be the last time his name appears on the list featuring Asia’s elite.

Ali Karimi ( Bayern Munich/ Iran)

Ever since his international debut for Iran against Kuwait in 1998, the Tehran born attacking midfielder has established himself as one of the top players in the continent. Tipped by Bayern Munich coach Felix Mcgath as the possible successor to Michael Ballack in Bayern’s midfield, AFC Footballer of year 2004-Karimi has shown the potential of matching with the best in the game. His vision in midfield along with mesmerizing runs and outrageous skill was instrumental in Iran’s successful world cup qualifying campaign. Despite failing to open his account in Iran’s world cup qualifying campaign, Karimi has continued his good form this season in Bundesliga for the German giants who find themselves at the top of the league. Iran national coach Branco Ivankovic who has identified Karimi as key to Iran’s world cup aspirations said, "Karimi is in full form now for Bayern, which is important for us. He is a strong individual and he can be an asset to any team. He is technically better now and his experience in Europe will surely boost our national side."
With strong performance for both club and national side, Karimi would be strong contender of winning the award for second consecutive time.

Young Pyo Lee (Tottenham Hotspurs/ South Korea)

Instrumental in PSV’s last season domestic and European success, Young Pyo Lee has set the world football on fire with his pace and tackling abilities. Along with fellow countrymen Park, Lee was part of PSV side which reached the semi finals of Europe’s biggest club competition namely UEFA Champions League. Rated by new club boss Martin Jol as the best left back in Europe, Lee scored two goals in South Korea’s world cup qualifying campaign and was voted in English Premier League Team of the week in his debut against Liverpool for Spurs. Praising Lee’s consistent performance both for club and country, PSV coach and former Korea national coach Gus Hiddink said, “Lee never has a bad game, is usually above average and sometimes great.”
Despite his low profile, the 28 year full back will be a strong contender for Asia’s elite footballing award.

Shunsuke Nakamura (Glasgow Celtic/ Japan)

With impressive performances in 2005 Confederation Cup in Germany and world cup qualifying campaign for Japan, Nakamura has earned himself the plaudits of being the creative force in “land of rising Sun’s” attack. In confederation cup, Nakamura was named man of the match against European champions Greece and world champions Brazil. His lone goal in the Confederations Cup came from long ranger in 2-2 draw with Brazil. Having played a pivotal role in preventing Reggina from relegation in Italian Serie A last season, Nakamura moved to Scottish side Celtic this summer. His brilliant form has continued in Scottish League, where his vision in midfield has been instrumental in Celtic’s attacking scheme of things. Fellow Celtic team mate John Hartson has applauded Nakamura’s influence on the team. “He has an incredible vision and touch, and the fact that he’s done the business in Serie ‘A’ shows he can cut it at the very highest level. He is a very clever player and has a bit of magic.”
Considering his exploits at the top stage this year, Nakamura would be a strong contender to this year’s prize.

Hidetoshi Nakata (Bolton Wanderers/ Japan)

Having recently opened his account in English Premier League for Bolton, Hidetoshi Nakata would be hoping to resurrect his form which saw him earn Asian Player Award on previous two occasions. Having started the year on low note after his off field troubles with club side Fiorentina in Italian Serie A, Nakata is starting to cast his impact on Sam Allardyce’s Bolton Wanderers. Having won man of the match in his debut game against Portsmouth, Nakata European experience have come in good stead for Bolton’s UEFA campaign. Bolton manager Sam Allardyce praising the influence of Japanese midfielder on his side said, “Nakata gave us a cutting edge which we’ve not quite had and this will make us more of an attacking force.” However some below par performance for national team would severely hamper Nakata’s chances of winning the accolade for the third time in his career.

Javad Nekounam ( Pas/ Iran)

25 year old Javad Nekounam has emerged as influential member of Branko Ivankovic Iran’s national team. Playing in position of defensive midfielder both for club and national team, Javad was the epitome of consistency in Iran’s world cup qualifying campaign. Off late he has shown his skills in attack by scoring crucial goals for Pas in domestic league and AFC Champions League. His performances this year have attracted offers from European and Middle Eastern clubs with German club Kaiserlautern reportedly favorites to land the talented Iranian. Iran national coach Branko Ivankovic praising Nekounam’s contribution in Iran’s world cup qualifying campaign said, “He is a key player of our team and has the ability to be a playmaker as he is good in both attack and defense. He is a strong leader and technically at par with Karimi. He moves very fast and that is another added advantage."
Despite keeping low profile compared to fellow countrymen, Javad performance this season would certainly make him one of the top contenders for this year’s prize.

Ji Sung Park ( Manchester United/South Korea)

The favorite to win this year’s award, Park has been revelation ever since his high profile summer transfer move to Manchester United. His movement off the ball coupled with quick pace has made him an instant hit with the English giants. In addition to his brilliant performance at club level with PSV Eindoven and Manchester United, the Suwon born midfielder was instrumental in South Korea’s qualification in next summer’s world cup. Despite scoring only one goal in the campaign, Park’s experience and ability in midfield proved crucial to South Korea’s attacking scheme of things. “He's a very mobile player and very quick. He has unbelievable energy and to get players with that quality with the speed of the game is a real asset”, says Manchester United coach Alex Ferguson on Park’s influence with the red devils.
Voted by TIME Magazine as one of the Asia’s heroes for year 2005, Park is a strong favorite to lift this year’s player of the year award.

Maksim Shatskikh (Dynamo Kiev/ Uzbekistan)

The only player from outside of big four of Asian football, Shatskikh nomination for Asia’s elite award might have raised some questions but the Uzbekistan striker has proved his ability to score consistently at top stage of world football. His 100th goal for Dynamo Kiev this season was a testament of his consistency. A product of Tashkent football school, Shatskikh scored three goals in Uzbekistan’s world cup qualifying campaign before the central Asians lost to Bahrain in Asian playoff. With numerous English Premiership side following the developments of Uzbekistan international, national coach Bobby Houghton feels Shatskikh can be successful in the high demanding English game. “Maksim Shatskikh is the best striker in Uzbekistan and the whole of Central Asia. He is a typical forward valuable to the English Premiership: powerful, purposeful, and focused on goal.” he added. Despite his breathtaking form in Ukraine national league for Dynamo, Shatskikh remains an underdog for this year AFC Player of the year award.

Zayed Mabrouk ( Al Ittihad/ Saudi Arabia)

The only goal keeper in the nominees for AFC player of the year award, Zayed Mabrouk played an inspirational role in Saudi Arabia’s world cup qualifying campaign. Having kept six consecutive clean sheets in the campaign, Mabrouk earned adulation for his abilities under the posts. Another beneficiary of Mabrouk’s commanding presence in goals have been his club side Al Ittihad, who reached the finals of AFC Champions league for second consecutive seasons. “Mabrouk is an excellent goalkeeper. Any defender will feel safe playing with the knowledge that he is between the posts”, were the words of Al Itthad director of football Hamad Al Senia as Saudi giants hope to retain AFC Champions league for second seasons running.
The 25 year old will be an underdog in the race to be Asia’s best considering goal keepers have little history of winning individual honors.

Bahrain aim for the pinnacle
Rohit Goyal/Football Weekly, November

Bahrain are just 180 minutes away from reaching the pinnacle of world football as they take on Trinidad and Tobago in the crunch playoff match for the berth in the finals of FIFA World Cup 2006. Bahrain will travel to the Caribbean for the first leg of the playoff on 12 November before hosting Trinidad and Tobago four days later for a match that, for one team or the other, will see the realization of an unlikely dream.

The architect of Bahrain’s rise to upper echelons of Asian football is their Croatia born Belgian coach Luka Perzovic. The man who is not scared to hide his emotions and speak his mind will know that in Trinidad and Tobago, he faces the toughest challenge of his coaching career. Keeping the likes of Stern John or Dwight Yorke at bay would require Bahrain’s strong defense to be at its very best. Against Uzbekistan, Bahrain’s defense led by seasoned campaigner Syed Adnan and also consisting of Salman Isa, Muhammed Juma and Abdul Marzooq were able to foil central Asian’s attacking scheme of things by denying space and keeping the things organized in back line. With Jallal Syed playing the anchorman role in the midfield, Bahrain only conceded one goal in the playoff against likes of Kasimov and Shatskikh.

Not only defensively, Bahrain has proved to be a potent force attacking wise also. As part of their buildup for the key playoff qualifier, Bahrain thrashed Panama 5-0 despite missing some key players for the clash. Alaa Hubail, leading scorer for Bahrain in the world cup qualifiers will be key to Perzovic’s with his presence upfront. Despite failing to score against Uzbekistan, the dimutive striker gave a good account of himself with his movement both on and off the ball. He would be partnered upfront either with Talal Yusuf or Husain Ahmed. Apart from scoring five goals in the world cup qualifiers, Ahmed proved handful for some of the top defenders in Asia with his exquisite touches and mobility upfront. On other hand, Talal Yusuf has been able to prove his ability to take on defenders during his performance in world cup qualifiers. In midfield, Bahrain would rely on likes of attacking midfielder Muhammed Hubail to provide service to the front two.

Off the field, Bahrain has also been trying their best to unsettle their much fancied opponents through psychological warfare. Reported rumors of Bahrain hiring the services of former Trinidad and Tobago captain and Coach David Nakhid for scouting on islanders is already started to create uproars in the rival camp.

Building on the progress initiated back in 2002 by German coach Wolfgang Sidka, current coach Perzovic has his side fit, brimming confidence and keen for a spot in next summers final ahead of clash with Trinidad. Having never played in Caribbean before, Bahrain can expect a different sort of test both in terms of playing environment and weather when they travel to the Caribbean island. "It is our last opportunity to qualify for the World Cup,” said Talal Yusuf, the goal scorer of crucial away goal for Bahrain in the Asian play-off with Uzbekistan. “We have never been so close to play in the finals so we will give our best to make sure we achieve it.”

Ironically, Bahrain almost lost their opportunity of playing in next summer’s world cup after three consecutive losses to Japan and Iran in the qualifiers. With entry into next summer’s world cup at stake, Yusuf and company knows that they cannot afford to make the similar mistake. ”The team showed great discipline and the players are keen to make up for missing automatic qualification when they lost three consecutive matches, including two to Japan and one to Iran", said the talismatic striker.

While Bahrain football federation is promising to pay hefty monetary rewards to its players for a successful world cup qualifying campaign, Perzovic’s men would be aware that victory over Trinidad and Tobago will not only would be a big achievement for the Middle East country but also a giant step for Asian football.

Expected Lineup for Bahrain:
Ali Hasan (Goal Keeper), Syed Adnan Mohammed, Salman Isa, Muhammed Juma, Abdul Marzooq, Basheer Mohammed, Mohammed Saleem, Farhan Saleh, Muhammed Hubail, Husain Ahmed, Alaa Hubail

Andreas Moller ( 1990 world cup winner, 1996 Euro winner and 1997 Champions League winner,ex Juventus and Borussia Dortmund )

Interview was done on chances of Germany in world cup 2006, Michael Ballack Transfer and Increasing profile of Asian players playing in Europe.
